Memorable Things to Do in Tanzania as Soon as You Get off the Plane

Elephants roaming as the sun sets in the distance. The chirping of crickets as you settle into your luxury safari tent.

Welcome to Tanzania.

This gorgeous country has so many experiences to offer, no matter the length of your trip.

Keep reading to discover things to do in Tanzania as soon as you step off of the plane!

Explore Lake Natron

This eery red lake is literally as hot as hell. Due to salt-loving organisms and high levels of algae, the lake is a deep blood red and it is frequently higher than 104F. It’s nearly as basic as ammonia.

Although most organisms wouldn’t want to live anywhere near Lake Norton, over 2.5 million flamingos live and breed here. As one of the only natural flamingo breeding sites, preservation of the area is essential.

This natural wonder of the world is not to be missed and will make for some truly amazing vacation photos!

Stay in the Underwater Room at Manta Resort

At $1840.00 per night and a minimum three-night stay required, the Underwater Room is truly a once in a lifetime luxury.

If you’re headed on Tanzania on your honeymoon, there’s no better place to start your trip.

Appearing to float in the middle of the ocean (but really tethered down at each corner) this floating wooden structure complete with an underwater observatory is the perfect place for some romance. You’ll be able to spend your days swimming and your nights watching the stars from the roof. With the rest of the world far away, you’ll feel like the only ones in the world.

Eat Your Way Through Zanzibar’s Night Market

Stone Town neighborhood is well known for what happens after the sun goes down. Tables and chefs hats pop up and you’ll find flavors from all around the world.

The area was once at the center of the spice, slave, and ivory trade, so you’ll find cuisine from all around the world. Locals and tourists alike love visiting the market and you’ll find something new try to each time.

Make sure to bring Tanzanian shillings and be ready to barter so you don’t get overcharged! When in doubt, walk away. You’ll usually be chased after with a cheaper offer.

Go Snorkeling or Scuba Diving

What trip to the coast is complete without an incredible snorkeling or scuba diving trip? You’ve never seen water so blue and the coral reefs will leave you breathless.

Be sure to go with a sustainable operator so that the reefs don’t get hurt due to too much tourism.

Visit Gombe Stream National Park

Made famous by Jane Goodall, Gome Stream National Park is a must-do in Tanzania. Hire a guide to help you walk through the area and find some apes to observe. This is truly an incredible experience that can’t be beaten!

Explore the Sacred Kazu Cave

If you’re looking for a bit of mystery, you’ll want to explore the sacred Kazu Cave. With water so still you can’t tell where the water ends and the rock begins, these sacred caves lead to deeper and unexplored pools.

The site has been a place of ancestral worship for thousands of years and is closed to the public when ceremonies are happening.

Eat at the Restaurant That Becomes Its Own Island

The Rock, sat atop a rock at Michamvi Pingwe beach becomes its own island at high tide. Depending on the time of your reservation, you can arrive by foot or by boat.

The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner so you can book based on your desired tide level. If you’re there at high tide, you can dine on the patio and be surrounded by the beautiful blues of the Indian Ocean on three sides.

The restaurant isn’t as cheap as other local eateries, but you’ll be supporting local initiatives like teaching locals how to swim.

Climb Mount Kilimanjaro

If you’ve got a real hankering for adventure, a climb up the famous mounting Kilimanjaro might just be the perfect way to spend your trip in Tanzania.

Known as the roof of Africa with an incredible view over the Furtwängler Glacier, is not a trip for the faint of hearted, but it at least means that you’ll work off all the food and drink from the amazing resorts that you’ll be staying in.

Take the Machame Route for an extra day to acclimate and to give yourself the best shot at reaching the summit.

Go On Safari

What trip to Africa is complete without a safari experience! With so many options available, it can be hard to know which to choose.

Vencha Travel has incredible recommendations for safari packages and beach packages that are the cherry on top of any Tanzania adventure!

Do a Hot Air Balloon Tour

While hot air balloon tours in Tanzania don’t come cheap (even as high as $600), the once in a lifetime experience is well worth the price tag.

Take a tour over the Serengeti Plains at sunrise for what is sure to be the most magical experience of your life. You’ll see the sun creep over the horizon as golden hour begins. The animals will start to wake up and it’s as if the earth is taking its first breath.
