7 Paddle Boarding Tips for Your Next Outdoor Adventure

Did you know that the standup paddleboarding market is expected to grow by $59 million during the next few years? If you need a reason (or a few million) to try it, you’ve got it! Stand-up paddleboarding is a fantastic fitness activity that you can enjoy in the great outdoors.

If you’re a paddleboard newbie, there are a few things to learn first. Having trouble standing up on your paddleboard? Check out these stand-up paddleboarding tips for that and more will make your next trip on the water even better.

1. Get Your Gear Ready

Before you hit the water, make sure you have all your necessary gear first. You’ll need a personal flotation device, your board, a leash, a paddle, and a board bag. Except for the board bag, you’ll take the other items out on the water with you.

2. Dress for the Conditions

Depending upon what kind of paddleboarding you are doing, you’ll need to dress for it. While many people wear a swimsuit, you may also want to wear a rash guard, hat, sandals, and sunglasses. If you are paddling in cold water, you might want to wear a wetsuit.

3. Size Your Paddle

One of the most basic but essential paddle board tricks is to size your paddle correctly. You should adjust yours so that it is around 8-10″ taller than your height.

4. Paddle Boarding Tips to Stand Up on a SUP

To stand up on a paddleboard, you’ll actually have to start in a kneeling position. Grip the edges of the board to stabilize it, and slowly move one foot at a time to a standing position. Don’t try to fully stand up from there, but rise from a crouching position.

5. How to Balance on a SUP

Now that you’re up and at ’em, you need to learn how to balance on a paddleboard. Adopt a stance where your feet are parallel and your toes stay pointed forward, about hip-width apart. Keep your gaze on the horizon, and don’t stand too stiffly—allow movement from your hips especially.

6. How to Fall and Get Back Up

If you feel yourself tipping over, try to fall to the side of the board rather than over it. When you need to get back on, grip the sides of the board and hoist yourself up on the centerline.

7. Find the Best Paddle Board

If you want to set yourself up for success, choose a paddleboard that is the best match for you. There are many options to choose from like traditional boards to inflatable ones. You can compare different types and read reviews at isupreviews.com.

Ready to Stand Up Paddle Board?

Now that you’ve learned paddle boarding tips like how to stay on a paddleboard and more, you can use your knowledge with confidence. Always make sure you have the necessary gear, including safety items. And if it’s your first time, choose a flat and calm body of water.
