The Difference Between Running Shoes & Walking Shoes

Every person needs to have at least a few different pairs of shoes in their closest. Whether you want the latest Puma sneakers or the new-and-improved Asics Gel Kayano, there are all kinds of shoes out there designed to keep your feet comfortable everywhere. At the bare minimum, you should have a pair of walking shoes and a pair of running shoes. You never want to go for a jog in the former, so you should learn the differences between the two sets so that you can adequately take care of your feet.

Cushioning

One of the biggest differences between the two shoes is how much cushioning you get on the inside. Runners require more cushions so that the shoes can better support them with each step. This is the main reason why you see so many running shoes advertise their first-class air cushioning systems. Walkers do not necessarily need all of this extra padding. Unless you plan on walking for over six miles at a time, you can stick with lighter shoes or racing flats.

Flexibility

No matter what type of shoe you buy, you want to make sure it is flexible. To test this, you need to press down on the toe to see where it bends. It will either bend at the midfoot or forefoot. Runners need shoes that bend at the forefoot because that is where the foot will strike on the pavement. Meanwhile, walkers can utilize shoes that bend closer to the arch because their feet will bend closer to the toes. Above all else, you want to make sure you avoid shoes that do not bend at all. Even walkers need some level of flexibility so that their feet do not develop injuries.

Heel Height

Running shoes are supposed to give runners stability with the built-up heel. Runners can strike the pavement first with various parts of the foot, and a higher heel will ensure a safe landing every time. Meanwhile, walkers tend to land first with the heel and roll through the step. Therefore, they gain no use out of a higher heel. Walkers will benefit the most out of a shoe with the lease amount of height difference from the heel to the toe.

Heel Flare

Another feature runners want to look out for is a heel flare. A flared heel provides additional stability for when runners strike the ground with their forefoot or midfoot. It is particularly useful when you go on trails that will have uneven terrain. When you look for fitness walking shoes, you do not require a flared heel because it will impede the ability to roll forward through the step. Walkers should look for shoes with undercut heels instead.

Most shoes advertise themselves as being walking or running shoes, so you should not have a problem finding the right one for your needs. From Nike to Adidas sneakers for men, you can find everything you need from an online shoe shop. With the right shoes, you will be able to go about your day in total comfort and style.
