In fact, you don’t need to dress in a typical collared shirt to enjoy a day on the course. There are plenty of casual golf attire options you can take advantage of before you head out.
Not sure where to start? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.
Let’s take a look at everything you need to know.
You Don’t Always Need a Collar
As previously mentioned, you don’t have to wear the conventional collared shirt to get access to the course.
While you can’t wear T-shirts or tank tops, you can (depending on the course’s manager) wear a shirt with a turtleneck collar. This will give you more flexibility when it comes to choosing your outfit.
If dress pants aren’t your thing (and they won’t be if you live in a state with a warmer climate), you can often wear pleated shorts as an alternative.
Women can wear skirts, so long as they adhere to the course’s standards in terms of length and design. In general, golf skirts will have undershorts and are made to allow full range of motion when swinging.
Occasionally, men will be allowed to wear jeans, but this isn’t a common scenario. If you’re traveling and are unsure if you’ll be able to get away with wearing jeans, pack a pair of suitable pants just in case or call the course’s office beforehand.
You’re not required to wear any specific type of hat or sunglasses while on the course, but some types are appropriate while others are not. The most popular options are baseball caps and visors, but straw hats are also commonly seen out on the course.
More casual headwear like beanies, though, are typically not permitted. So, you’ll want to make sure you have course-appropriate headgear such as golf hats before heading out for a round of golf.
You won’t get away with wearing sneakers or running shoes. You also aren’t allowed to wear sandals or boots (although the latter option seems fairly counterproductive in terms of comfort).
Instead, your golfing shoes must have spikes on the soles that are made of either rubber or plastic, as metal could cause damage to the course.
Since you’ll be out on the course for hours at a time, you’ll want a golf shoe that provides plenty of comfort and mobility. You can check out the selection at Footjoy for a list of quality footwear that you can wear to the course.
