What is the Best Flooring for a Playroom?

If you are creating a playroom for your children, then you need to think carefully about some of the decorations you are putting in it. While it can be fun to pick out colourful pictures or creative storage solutions, you also need to think about how the room itself is put together. In particular, your flooring is going to need to be carefully chosen. Here are some of the floors you could consider.

Playroom, Childhood, Toys, Nursery, Interior

The Issues

You need to think carefully about the floors that you are choosing for your playroom for a number of reasons. First and foremost, it needs to be something that will not injure your children if they have a slip or a trip.

You should also look for something that will be easy for you to clean. The playroom should always be a place for creativity and learning, but with active imagination comes mess. If your children have an art station in one corner of their playroom, you will need to have a floor underneath that will be easy to clean. Poster paints, felt tips and crayons, while best kept on paper, are prone to straying.

Wood Flooring

One of the best options to choose might be a floor made from engineered wood. This is a smart choice, not too dissimilar to laminate flooring, that can make for a beautiful foundation for any playroom. In addition to all the natural colours, you can very easily find some brighter options that would create a fun environment for your children.

Engineered flooring is a great choice as it is easy to clean. All it needs is a light damp mop every now and then to keep it as good as new. However, it is not the comfiest of surfaces. You may want to place some non-slip mats down to give your children a nicer place to play on compared to the hard floor.

Carpet

Another brilliant option would be carpeting. As with wood floors, there are some very bright and beautiful colours you could choose from. There is no need to pick a neutral carpet for a playroom. Why not choose something green to simulate a field or a park, or a bright blue for their deep-sea adventures?

Carpet is also much softer and will not hurt as much in the event of a fall. However, it is not easy to clean. Spills and dirt can get trodden into a carpet and can be difficult to lift. Young children are not always very quick to tell you when a spill happens. Even performing a sweep of the playroom each evening might leave it a bit too late to clean something up. If you aren’t willing to let the carpet get mucky and replace it in a year or so, then you should probably look elsewhere.

Think carefully about what your children need for their playroom. That should help give you the perfect idea about the floor they need. Arty children who love to make a mess will benefit from engineered wood flooring, while others might prefer something a little gentler. Don’t forget to take their wishes into consideration; before you know it you will have put together the perfect playroom together!
