How to Prepare Your Home for Summer

Summer is only a few months away. Is your home ready for the blazing summer heat? If not, now is the best time to start prepping your home before the weather becomes too intense. With the onset of climate change, summer temperatures can become too uncomfortable and overwhelming. Don’t know where to start? Follow these hacks to brace for the heat:

Buy Blackout Curtains

If you can’t make any significant changes to the structure of your home, one cost-effective way of insulating your home is by buying blackout curtains. These linens act as a thermal curtain to block the harsh sunlight. Use them in areas of your home that are constantly exposed to direct sunlight. Since they help dampen the sunlight, your air conditioning system won’t need to work overtime. Not only will you insulate your house, but you will also benefit from lowering your utility bills.

Check Your Home’s Insulation

Another way to keep your home cool through summer is to check your home’s insulation. Start with your windows and doors. See if there are any cracks that need to be sealed. J&J Insulation Inc advises that once you feel a draft in your house, cool air is leaking from your home. If you have the budget, you can conduct an energy audit to see if there are any hidden areas in your home that require caulking or sealing. You may also need to see if you have a suitable insulation at home. Besides, investing in proper insulation can benefit you year-round.

Replace Windows

If you have worn out windows that are beyond repair, it might be time to replace them. Repetitive caulking and sealing can be a waste of money, and old, decrepit windows can only let the hot air in your home. If you have your air condition unit turned on, the windows can be a way for the cold air to escape. This means your HVAC system needs to take on more workload. Many use this as a time to also consider good window tinting near me options as tint reduces the harmful rays, and the heat that is dissipated into the home, reducing electric bills.  If you are planning on getting a window replacement, go for energy-efficient window types.

Test Your Air Conditioners

Don’t wait for the first blow of hot air before testing your air conditioner. If you haven’t used them in a while, it will be in your best interest to check them now to see if they are working as they should. Waiting for the summer breeze to find out any issues can be a hassle. Remember, most air condition technicians will be busy at this time of the year, so you might need to wait a while before you can have your AC repaired. Make sure that your air conditioner is clean. Check the filters and have them cleaned. It’s also a way for you to save on energy costs.

Have Your Fans Ready

If you have ceiling fans at home, it is time to rotate them. They must be rotating counterclockwise to push the cool air down and allow it to circulate in your home. If you have stand fans, place them in strategic areas. You can put one facing the window and the other one toward the window from across the room. This placement ensures that your room will have that cross draft to quickly cool your room. Cooling fans are also great investments because they can help circulate cool air in your home.

These are just some of the tips to help you prepare your home for summer. Start them now when the weather is still fine.
