Most people tend to like social activities and games they can play with their friends and family. We may be into different kinds of games, someone might prefer cards, whereas another might be into board games, but we all like social games. Okay, there might be few exceptions, but you get what we’re saying, right?!
However, there are times when we are simply not in a position to get together with our friends and family and play games, so, we need to look for alternatives ways to have fun together. Fortunately, there are plenty of game that can be played online, without any changes in the gameplay, so you would be able to have fun with your friends, even if each of you is in a different corner of the world.
Chess
Often called the oldest game, and traditionally labelled a sport, chess is perhaps the most intellectual board game, although it is quite different from other conventional board games. Unlike other games where luck is involved, even if it requires skill, chess is all about skill. No aspect of chess involves luck, the only thing that can give a player an advantage is whether they are going to play with the white pieces or the black pieces. The history of chess is remarkable, chess has been around since the 6th or the 7th century and unlike most other games, the rules haven’t been changed practically at all.
There are lots of websites and apps that offer players a chance to play chess virtually, either against other players, as well as against a computer (AI). Chess is an all-time classic, a game that will not die, and while it is better to play it in person, preferably on a fancy set, playing it online can be just as fun.
Monopoly
The world’s most popular and, many would agree, most played board game is quite remarkable and interesting. Namely, the person who came up with the original concept and developed the first version of the game was anti-monopolist and her idea was to use a board game to show how negative the concept of monopolies is and its impact on people and economies. Lizzie Magie created The Landlord’s Game, which is the predecessor of Monopoly to practically present Henry George’s economic theory, which is essentially anti-monopolistic.
It is interesting that a game based on the concept of monopoly, i.e. the right of a company to be the sole bearer of rights to sell a certain product or service, has actually been at the centre of multiple lawsuits and legal battles between companies fighting for the right to distribute it.
The US version was developed first, but there was soon a UK version, as well as multiple regional variants. The main difference between different versions are the names of the streets and utilities to reflect the particular country/region.
If you’re a fan of Monopoly, you are probably aware that the game is also available online, and in a digital format.
Bingo
A classic game, immensely popular in Britain and other parts of the world, bingo has been around for quite some time, but it became a standard and regular pastime for many after the end of WWII. Bingo halls were popping up all across the country. For many, a game of bingo at the local bingo hall was a perfect opportunity to catch up with friends and neighbours. Winners would go home quite pleased with the outcome, whereas those who did not manage to win wouldn’t be too disappointed either.
The number of open bingo halls in the UK has been constantly in decline since the mid-2000s, but that was mainly due to the establishment of the first online bingo sites. In the early days, it seemed that not a lot of people would prefer the online option over standard land-based bingo.
However, a lot new bingo sites have been launched in the past several years and it seems that a lot of people nowadays prefer playing online. A lot of people who haven’t been interested in bingo previously, actually started playing the game online. Online bingo offers more variety in terms of games and players don’t need to wait too long before a game begins.
Backgammon
Another board game, but this is a game that has been around for quite a while. Its origin can be traced back to the 5,000 years ago. It is a game played between two players, each of which gets 15 checkers. The game is played with dice, a set of two dice.
Backgammon and chess are usually played on the same board, where the chess board is played on the top, whereas the backgammon game is played on the bottom side of the board.
Nowadays people have a chance to play online, either against friends, or against people they don’t know. So, in addition to playing your favourite game, you will also have a chance to meet new people and chat with them while playing.
