If you’ve allowed your garage to get all out of whack during the cooler fall and winter months, now’s the time to get back into your garage and get some organizing done. With a clean and organized garage, you can spend time in there when the warmer months come on and make sure that you know where everything is as you try to take advantage of the days when it’s nice to be outside.
To help you in taking on this endeavor, here are three tips for doing spring cleaning in your garage.
Get Rid Of Unused Items
Before you start doing any real cleaning, the best place to start in your garage is with getting rid of the items that you don’t need or don’t want anymore.
As you look at your garage, try to find things that you haven’t used in the last year. Put those items in a pile. Once you’ve looked through everything and found the items that you haven’t used much in the recent past, you should then determine what you can get rid of from that pile. If there are things like tools that you can repair, determine to do so. But if you find things that you either can’t fix or simply don’t want anymore, get them out of your space so that you can really see what you’re working with as you seek to organize your garage.
Keep Alike Items Together
When it’s time to start organizing your garage, the most effective way to go about doing this is by keeping alike items together. This will make it so much easier for you to find things in your garage.
If you can manage it, try to keep all of your items off of the floor so that you can keep them clean and safe. And by storing all winter items together, all sports items together, all home goods and supplies together, you’ll be better able to see exactly what you have.
Don’t Forget The Floor
Before you start moving everything back into your garage, you should be sure to give the floor a good cleaning.
To start with, empty as much out of the space as possible so that you can clean as much of the floor as you’re able to get to. Then, sweep up the floor of as much debris as you can. You can use a broom, vacuum, or a shop vac for this work. Then, wipe the floor down with some water and soap so that you can clean off all the caked on dirt and mess. This way, when you move everything back into the garage, or go out into the garage from your home, you won’t have to worry as much about storing things in a dirty space or walking on dirt and gunk from outside.
If you’re needing to do some cleaning and organizing in your garage, consider using the tips mentioned above to help you do this this spring.
